Scarborough's South Bay Could Fail EU Water Regs Despite £50m Improvements
Scarborough's South Bay beach could fail new EU water quality regulations, according to the latest assessment by the Environment Agency.
Dozens of other beaches around England are also at risk of failure including Blackpool, Clacton, Morecambe and Margate.
In total 46 beaches could be affected due to sewer things like sewer overflows, manure running off from farmland and poorly connected drains in coastal homes and businesses.
Over the coming weeks the Environment Agency will be taking samples from Scarborough's South Bay and other locations to test for faecal bacteria which, if present, can result in swimmers suffering from gastroenteritis, eye or ear infections.
This news comes just weeks after Yorkshire Water announced the completion of over £50 million of improvements to Scarborough's waste water pumping, storage and treatment facilities.
