The Traditional Seaside Holiday is Back - According to Travelodge

The Staycation has reached record levels this year with 74% of us holidaying at home, according to Travelodge’s annual holiday index.

This is the fifth consecutive year that the trend of holidaying at home has grown and it’s believed that this will boost the UK economy by as much as £15 billion as holidaymakers increase their average spend to over £430.

In the last three years, the number of Brits taking a Staycation break has more than doubled. Over half those surveyed said that they were taking several short breaks throughout the year, rather than just one big break.

Most interestingly of all however is the prediction that we are to see a return of the traditional seaside holiday with more people saying that they that they are heading to the seaside than the city.

In total 40% of British holidaymakers said that they were planning a trip to the coast this summer with Scarborough named as one of the top 5 destinations.

The Top 10 Coastal Destinations
  1. Cornwall
  2. Devon
  3. Blackpool
  4. Brighton
  5. Scarborough
  6. Bournemouth
  7. Whitby
  8. Skegness
  9. Isle of Wight
  10. Great Yarmouth.
After a trip to the seaside, city breaks were most popular with 37% of people saying they’ll heading for the city in 2014 with London, Edinburgh and York topping the list.

Peter Gowers, Travelodge Chief Executive said:

“2014 looks like being the year of the Staycation. More of us than ever before are being inspired to get up and go and explore what Britain has to offer.”

“At Travelodge, were seeing particularly strong demand from families and couples having multiple short breaks rather than the traditional fortnight. It all points to the fact that the nations desire for a great holiday is still with us, but more than ever, were all looking for great value and finding it here in the UK.”
