Have Your Say: 18-30 Nights Out Survey

Scarborough Drinking Culture
As part of its efforts to tackle problems associated with excess alcohol consumption and improve the town’s night time economy, the Safer Communities Partnership is asking those aged between 18-30 for their feedback on Scarborough's nightlife.

Broadly speaking Scarborough is a relatively safe and enjoyable place to enjoy a night out, but as a designated Local Alcohol Action Area the multi-agency partnership has been tasked with understanding the factors that encourage the trend of 'pre-loading' and binge dinking.

Scarborough Borough Council Community Safety Manager and Safeguarding Officer, Sandra Rees, said:

“Pre-loading is not an issue that’s unique to Scarborough, but over the last 18 months or so, it does seem to be much more prevalent. We’re seeing more instances of people arriving in town and spilling out of taxis, already heavily intoxicated.

“These extreme levels of inebriation are resulting in more anti-social behaviour, particularly on a Saturday night, and more people ending up in Accident and Emergency who have either been the victim of an assault or are suffering from the effects of too much alcohol.”

Sgt. Rachel Wood of North Yorkshire Police added:

“We are concerned that more people are drinking irresponsibly and putting themselves in a vulnerable position as a result. We want people to come to Scarborough and enjoy an evening out but we also want people to be safe and not end up in A&E as the victim of an assault, or under arrest after getting involved in disorder.”

In order to understand the town's night time culture and therefore promote responsible drinking the Safer Communities Partnership is asking locals aged between 18 and 30, who regularly go out in the town, to complete a short online survey.

The survey, which asks about drinking habits and how Scarborough's nightlife might be improved, takes just 5 minutes to fill-in and can be completed anonymously.
