Plans Revealed To Replace Futurist Theatre With Major New Attraction

Futurist Theatre Scarborough

The Yorkshire Post has published an article this week revealing plans to demolish Scarborough’s Futurist Theatre to make way for a major new tourist attraction.

If passed the plans would see the construction of a new visitor attraction featuring three distinct environments referred to as ‘Subterranean’, ‘Coastline’ and ‘Sky’.

The source of the information is unclear but the plans are rumoured to include some unusual features including:

  • Glass-fronted building with cascading water
  • Cave themed indoor attraction
  • Roller coaster
  • 55m Space shot tower
  • Iconic Lighthouse structure
  • Walk-through aviary
  • Undercover botanical garden
  • New town square on the site of King Street Car Park
  • Elevated dining venue with views out across the North Sea
  • 10,500 sq ft of residential, office or hotel space

This elaborate proposal is one of two bids to be presented to Scarborough Borough Council officials next week. Details of the second plan appear not to have been revealed, but the council’s Director of Business Support Nicholas Edwards is quoted as saying:

“Given that Bidder A or Bidder B did not express any interest in retaining a theatre of any form within their development proposals consideration must be given to the development opportunities that may be derived from demolishing the Lower Tier Futurist buildings and clearing the site.”

  1. How can we believe anything that's said. It's what gets done that matters, and this seems like another carrot that's likely to be rotten once the futurist is demolished.

  2. Will this go the same way as the wonderful new swimming pool on the Weaponess park & ride?

    1. Weaponess needs a lot of levelling or the pool will be really deep at one end and as for the Football pitches we will see a lot of players running up that hill!!!

  5. Sounds very exciting. Just what a 21st century holiday resort needs, but will it really come to fruition?

  6. Well the demolition costs are well under so that will rise!! must be a friend of a friend on the council who (A) wants the site and (B) someone in the council must know a demolition man!!! But what I want to know is why are we "the council tax payers" having to pay We want to keep the Futurist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. Why another tourist attraction? why can,t we have something that will serve and make money for the town all year round ??? something like The Slug and Lettuce chain of wine bars and eateries, somewhere couples of all ages can go for a nice relaxing night out without having to fight the drunks , hoodies and druggies, somewhere nice and trendy .
