Stephen Joseph Theatre to Undergo £350k Redevelopment

Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre is to undergo a £350k redevelopment project early next year.

The improvements will not only enable the town centre theatre to bring its props and wardrobe facilities on-site, it will also see the constructions of a brand new outreach centre.

Currently, the SJT stores all its costumes and props off-site, which is not only inconvenient but it is also becoming increasingly costly to maintain.

As well as helping to improve the theatre's costume-making and fitting services, theatre bosses are also hoping the improved space will help generate extra income by running a costume hire service.

The new outreach centre will allow the SJT to increase its number of community work whilst also reducing the amount of money currently spent of renting venues for such projects.

It is also hoped that subsidised used of the new space will be made available for emerging writers, directors, actors and technicians to develop their skills by forming relationships with associate companies.

A spokesperson from the Stephen Joseph said:

"Lack of space constrains our ambition to expand our work and we have struggled to find suitable accommodation for all activities. The idea of securing a permanent home for outreach has been a central strategic concern for some time."

The venue has secured funding to the value of £275,000 from Arts Council England’s capital grant scheme to help cover the costs of the project.
