Scarborough Confirmed as Stage Hosts of Tour de Yorkshire after SBC Agree Contribution of £135k

Tour of Britain Cycle Race Scarborough

As we predicted back in July Scarborough has been confirmed as stage hosts of the first ever Tour de Yorkshire after Scarborough Council agreed a financial contribution of £135,000.

It is believed that Scarborough will host day two of the major new cycling event, although an official announcement confirming all stages of the three-day event is yet to be made.

The official route will be unveiled in January with the event itself set to take place on the first weekend of May. There are also plans for a women’s event as well as a mass participation ride for the public to join.

Race organisers Welcome to Yorkshire and the Amuary Sport Organisation (ASO) estimate that the Tour de Yorkshire will attract one million people to the region over the three days which Scarborough Council hope cabinet will more than offset the initial expense.

The ASO will provide specialist equipment such as big screens and podium stands, but Scarborough council will be expected to provide crowd barriers, toilets, power and water.

City of York Council has also committed £150,000 to the event, however it has said that the hosting fee to bring the tour to the city must be met by external funding.
