Have Your Say: Council Launches Seagull Survey

Herring Gull Scarborough

Following last weeks announcement that a 'Seagull Task Force' had been set up to look into the problems being caused by seagulls, residents and businesses are now been asked to give their opinions via an online survey.

Arranged by the council’s Overview and Scrutiny task group, the survey seeks to gather feedback on the problems associated with herring gulls and kittiwakes along the Yorkshire coast, following increasing concerns about the birds.

The objective of the review is to identify practical, effective, affordable and sustainable measures to reduce the nuisance caused by seagulls. The survey also includes information about legal restrictions that apply to the control of both species.

A statement released by the council today however was at pains to say that any solutions must be cost effective due to financial constraints and that the council will need the support of other local organisations as they cannot alleviate this problem on their own.

Cllr Godfrey Allanson, Chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Task Group said:

"We know the problems associated with herring gulls and kittiwakes are very topical with many local residents and businesses.  We are therefore very keen to gather information from those people about the problems they encounter with the two different species. This information is crucial to allow us to build up a detailed picture of how our coastal communities are affected and in turn, help inform what solutions could be introduced to lessen the problems."

To take part in the survey visit or contact the council's Policy and Performance team on 01723 232323 or by email to request a printed copy.

The survey is open until Tuesday 17 February.
