Work on Scarborough's new £14m water park has now begun.

After years in the planning work on North Bay's long-awaited water park officially started on Thursday 15 January 2015.

The new attraction, which will be built on Burniston Road car park, is being billed as 'one of a kind' by developer Benchmark Properties Limited, who also promise that it will feature 'some of the best rides in the world'.

The multi-million pound development will be built by Tolent Construction and once finished will be operated by Alpamare one of the largest operators of leisure parks in Europe.

Scheduled to be completed by Easter 2016 the new water park is expected to attract half a million visitors a year and will feature four thrilling water rides, wave pool, luxury spa, and outdoor infinity pool.

Hampered by delays, the project eventually gathered momentum in September 2013 when Scarborough Borough Council agreed the controversial loan of £9m to developer Benchmark Properties Limited. Legal documents were finally rubber stamped in 2014 to allow the water park to go ahead.

Cllr Tom Fox, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council said:

"This is the news we've all been waiting for and I’m absolutely delighted.  The years of planning, work on complex financial and legal agreements and transparent step by step decision making by the council together with Benchmark’s vision, dedication and cooperation have resulted in this week’s imminent start on site finally becoming a reality."

"The hard work that has gone into getting the project to this stage should not be underestimated and I would to like sincerely thank all those who have been involved.  We really can now look forward, with excitement, to building a world class attraction here in Scarborough which the borough, Yorkshire and the UK can be very proud of."

Cllr Derek Bastiman, Deputy Leader of Scarborough Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning added:

"To say everyone involved in this project is very excited with this week’s fantastic news is an understatement.  An attraction of this quality and scale will bring massive economic benefits, not just to Scarborough, but the wider borough and Yorkshire as well, both in the construction phase and once it is open."

"The water park will be an all year round, family attraction, unique to the UK, which will significantly enhance Scarborough's reputation as a premier coastal resort and have a positive knock on effect on many other local businesses both in terms of attracting extra visitors to the area and providing extra opportunities for the supply chain."

Roland Duce for Benchmark Properties added:

"We would like to thank all of the people involved for their help and support in getting this project underway and look forward to our opening in spring 2016."
