With excitement mounting ahead of Scarborough's staring role inaugural Tour de Yorkshire on Friday 1 May, local businesses are being invited attend a series of Tour de Yorkshire roadshows.

The roadshows are to be run by Welcome to Yorkshire and Scarborough Borough Council and will take place in in Scarborough and Whitby.

With a recent economic impact study of the Tour de France suggesting that over £100m was generated for the Yorkshire economy the new roadshows aim to help local businesses make the most of this world-class event.

The Scarborough roadshows will be held at the Scarborough Campus of the University of Hull between 5.45pm and 7.00pm on Monday 2 March and between 1.30pm and 3.00pm on Wednesday 11 March.

The Whitby roadshows will be held at Raithwaite Hall on Wednesday 25 February and Thursday 12 March, between 1.30pm and 3.00pm.

Local businesses wishing to attend one of the roadshows, which are free, must register in advance by visiting and following the relevant link for their chosen roadshow.

Janet Deacon, Scarborough Borough Council Tourism Manager and Area Director for Welcome to Yorkshire said:

"These are informative roadshows, specifically aimed at giving local businesses the practical information they need to maximise the benefits of the Tour de Yorkshire. We’re also looking forward to hearing about any exciting initiatives that businesses may be planning to celebrate the race passing through our borough."

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said:

"We saw a huge appetite for all things Yorkshire last year when we hosted the Grand Départ of the Tour de France, and this new race will bring back some of the world’s best teams. This means spectators from far and wide and the most fantastic advert our county can wish for – global television coverage.

"The roadshows will help businesses prepare in the run up to the event, race days themselves and of course long in to the future as we establish Yorkshire as Europe’s number one cycling destination."

Councillor John Weighell, Leader of North Yorkshire County Council, said:

"Our experience of the Tour de France was simply phenomenal, and the positive effects are still being felt for a huge range of businesses across the region. I’d encourage all businesses, large and small, to attend a roadshow and find out how to prepare for the Tour de Yorkshire."
