New Multi-Million Pound Education & Sports Campus Set For Scarborough

Coventry University

Scarborough Borough Council has announced exciting plans for a new university campus to be developed by Coventry University on land adjacent to the town’s old Weaponness Park and Ride site, to the south west of the town centre.

In addition, University Technical College (UTC) Scarborough, which has been set up to provide industry led education for 14 to 18 year olds, also plans to build its facilities on the same site.

The ambitious plan is for the two educational establishments to combine with the planned leisure village to create a multi-million pound education and sports campus.

The new facility will have state of the art learning, accommodation and leisure facilities and will sit alongside the long awaited community football stadium for Scarborough Athletic Football Club.

Coventry University and UTC Scarborough will work closely with the council and developers, Wrenbridge Land Limited, to develop the campus with the aim of both educational establishments being ready to open in autumn 2016.

Cllr Tom Fox, Scarborough Borough Council Leader said:

"I am delighted to be able to reveal these exciting plans. They are an inspirational example of the public and private sector working together to create a world class education and sports campus for Scarborough. All the elements of the development are fantastic in their own right, but combining them together on one site, is what makes it very special."

Cllr Derek Bastiman, Scarborough Borough Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Planning added:

“Not only will the development benefit our local young people in terms of offering a choice of high quality and specialist education, it will also attract students to the town from the rest of the UK and other countries. It will have wider economic benefits for the town, borough and Yorkshire region in terms of job creation, supplier businesses and student spend."

"Above all, Scarborough will be able to create its very own young business talent ready to feed into existing and future industries, which is a hugely exciting prospect."

Ian Dunn, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Experience) at Coventry University, added:

"We are very pleased to be working with Scarborough Borough Council on this exciting, new development which is designed to provide a high-value, affordable model of higher education in North Yorkshire."

"This new campus will follow our highly-successful Coventry University College model, which has demonstrated a new and sustainable concept in learning, in a focused teaching environment, which is all underpinned by the academic excellence of Coventry University."

"It is our firm belief that excellence in higher education should not be constrained by geography and as such we are committed to the long-term development of higher education provision in Scarborough, through a model that will help meet the local skills agenda and provide tangible benefits for the local community."

Peter Wilkinson, Chairman of UTC Scarborough Trust said:

"We are very excited to be part of such a state-of-the-art development. It makes complete sense for UTC Scarborough and the university campus to be built alongside each other, thereby giving students the opportunity of a seamless flow of first class education from the age of 14, right through to university leaving age."

"This is an essential development in guaranteeing Scarborough’s future success. Being on the same site as the leisure village will provide excellent facilities for students to take advantage of and we know this will be a huge selling point when we come to recruit students to the UTC."

UTC Scarborough will specialise in Advanced Engineering, Design and Control with the aim of creating a sustainable pool of future talent for priority technology industries. It will act as a catalyst investment, which will support the area’s world leading businesses, providing them with skilled and motivated employees and driving forward economic growth on the Yorkshire Coast.

UTC Scarborough is working in partnership with a range of local and national employers including: Unison Ltd, McCain, York Potash, Plaxtons, Dale Power Solutions, Atlas Ward and Scheider Electric.
