Scarborough Penguins Return to New Look £300k Home

Penguin Island

Scarborough Sea Life Sanctuary’s penguins returned to a newly refurbished home this month, bringing some new friends back with them.

The resident colony of 12 Humboldt penguins moved to temporary quarters in Great Yarmouth before Christmas, while their enclosure was given a £300,000 facelift.

Named Penguin Island, the new enclosure has been re-landscaped and now includes a spectacular waterfall and a novel walk-through trail for visitors, providing an even closer encounter with the lovable birds.

Staff couldn't wait to welcome back their old feathered friends, but they have also be welcomed some new additions too, as six youngsters have joined colony the all the way from Belgium.

The reaction of all 18 birds to the bigger and better Sea Life enclosure is something that all the staff have been looking forward to with Displays Supervisor Lyndsey Crawford saying:

"We've all missed our penguins. They’re such characters it's impossible not to get attached to them, and I know we’re all going to get equally attached to the new arrivals from our sister centre in Blankenberge, Belgium."

"We will have the biggest Humboldt colony in the entire Sea Life network, but they are gregarious birds and have already bonded over the winter."

"We’re really excited about their new home and we've no doubt they’re going to love it just as much as we do, and hopefully our visitors will do too when we open it officially in time for the Easter holidays."
