The World’s First Cinderella Story from China to be told at Stephen Joseph Theatre

Yeh Shen

Award-winning theatre company Yellow Earth presents Yeh Shen, the world’s first Cinderella story from China, at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough on 3 April.

Yeh Shen is a beautiful and enchanting tale of a young orphaned girl, a magical fish, a nasty stepmother and sister and a lost shoe. Will Yeh Shen be able to attend the New Year Festival? How can a fish, a dragon and a horse help her? Will she ever find happiness? And what happens to the shoe?

The story first appeared in 9th Century China, more than 1,000 years before the first European Cinderella story. Now Yellow Earth Theatre in association with Wimbledon’s Polka Theatre bring a new version of this timeless tale to life with puppetry, live music, elements of Beijing Opera and all the excitement, colour and sounds of the Chinese Spring Festival.

Yeh Shen is written by Scarborough-born children’s theatre director and writer Vicky Ireland and is the perfect show for family audiences and children aged 5 and above. In 2002, Vicky Ireland was awarded an MBE for services to children’s drama, the first of its kind.

Yeh Shen can be seen at the SJT on Friday 3 April at 2pm and 4pm. Tickets, priced at £8, are available from the Box Office on 01723 370541 and online at
