Music in The Round Presents Emma Johnson and John Lenehan at The Stephen Joseph Theatre

Emma Johnson

One of Britain’s best loved musicians, clarinettist Emma Johnson, who won BBC Young Musician of the Year 31 years ago, offers a sparkling and wide-ranging programme of classical music, from Chopin to Bernstein.

In partnership with her long-time collaborator, pianist John Lenehan, Emma Johnson presents a sparkling programme at the Stephen Joseph Theatre on 30 April.

It features at its heart two of the best-loved sonatas of the clarinet repertoire, by Brahms and Saint-Saëns, framed by a series of dynamic and irresistible works by composers of the last two centuries, including some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written, for West Side Story.

Heralded as "England’s best-loved clarinet player" by BBC Music Magazine, Emma Johnson has been captivating audiences in the UK and abroad with her spontaneous and virtuosic performances ever since she won the BBC Young Musician of the Year Award in 1984.

Renowned for her persuasive interpretations and for her ability to draw rich and varied tones from her instrument, Emma has proved her mastery in performing the greatest works in the clarinet repertoire and also presenting engaging concerts for and with young musicians and audiences. Above all, she is consistently praised for her exceptional powers of expressive communication.

TV appearances range from a recital for Sky Arts to prime-time chat shows and gala concerts. She featured in the Channel 4 documentary about the late Sir John Dankworth and played the popular hit theme tune for The Victorian Kitchen Garden (winning a Novello Award) for the BBC. Her radio work includes Artist of the Week for both BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM and she has narrated feature programmes about Finzi and Milton for BBC Radio 4, both chosen as Pick of the Week.

Her recordings are acclaimed for their expressive power and technical finesse, including a recent disc with John Lenehan which features the Brahms sonata featuring in this concert. In 2015, Emma and John are also debuting her new Jazz trio, exploring the place of the clarinet in the history of Jazz music.
