Own a Piece of Stephen Joseph Theatre History in 60th Anniversary Charity Auction

A Midsummer Night's Dream

From cute to quirky, fashionable to practical and intriguing to entertaining, there’s lots of lots in the Stephen Joseph Theatre's 60th anniversary charity auction and sale.

On April 26, the Scarborough theatre turns sale house for the day when the public will have the chance to bid on SJT memorabilia from past productions and exclusive experience days as well as purchase various theatrical items and accessories in a table and rail sale.

Fans of Janie Dee may recognise outfits worn by the actress in Alan Ayckbourn’s 2008 revival of Woman In Mind. Party numbers sported by Abi Titmuss in John Godber’s 2013 premiere Muddy Cows, a princess dress seen in Ayckbourn’s Awaking Beauty and a ladies’ two-piece suit from his 2012 play Surprises - both designed by Michael Holt, and a 1910-inspired evening gown from Chris Monks’ 2010 production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream are some of the other costume lots on offer.

Furniture pieces going under the hammer range from art deco table and chairs to garden furniture, sofas, Victorian reproductions and ornate thrones.

Winning bidders of behind the scenes experiences will be able to watch a performance from the lighting control room and discover how the technical crew run a show; explore the building from rooftop to basement in a special hard hat tour; treat a group of friends to a vintage fashion makeover; and, for anyone who perhaps might like to propose or wish a happy birthday in a theatrical fashion, there’s the opportunity to have your own greeting on the theatre’s front canopy.

Cinderella’s surfboard, a giant cuddly toy, Monty the 6ft golden gnome as seen in Ayckbourn’s Neighbourhood Watch and a bridal veil with a difference are some of the more unusual lots in the catalogue. In addition to the auction, visitors can also snap up items in a general sale including scripts, crockery, glassware, clothing, shoes, linen, knitwear, vintage fashion and more.

Artistic Director Chris Monks said:
"It’s the SJT’s 60th anniversary year, we have an exciting capital build project to create new onsite storage for costume and props and we will soon see the grand opening of the community OutReach Rooms. While clearing out our stores to make way for these new facilities we’ve unearthed some fantastic items for auction, so whether you’re looking to own a piece of SJT history, something quirky or more practical, come along and you can pick up some theatrical gems whilst also helping to raise valuable funds for the theatre."
The table and rail sale starts from 10am on Sunday 26 April at the Stephen Joseph Theatre. Auction lots can also be viewed on the day from 10am before bidding gets underway in The Round at 2pm. The full catalogue, along with theatrical history details and further auction information, can be viewed in advance online at www.sjt.uk.com.
