'Jazz Ensemble of The Year’ to Star at This Year’s Scarborough Jazz Festival

The Engines Orchestra

The winners of 'Jazz Ensemble of the Year' at this year's Parliamentary Jazz Awards are set to star at this year’s Scarborough Jazz Festival.

The Engines Orchestra is London’s freshest cross-genre ensemble. Combining some of the capital’s most exciting young classical and jazz instrumentalists this is a community of musicians who come together to challenge conventions and push the boundaries of creative music making.

The Orchestra was founded by acclaimed saxophonist and composer Phil Meadows in April 2014.  Phil received the prestigious Peter Whittingham Jazz Award in 2013 and then the Parliamentary 'Jazz Newcomer of the Year Award' in 2014.

His direct approach to composition and arrangement, using a versatile contemporary pallet of sound and instrumentation, entirely matches his high ambitions.

The Engine Orchestra produces soaring melodies (a few of them sung by the upcoming vocalist and violinist Alice Zawadzki) and sweeping cosmic jazz-ish strings. This is an orchestra that will excite both jazz and classical enthusiasts.

'I’m feeling a bit pleased with myself,' says Mike Gordon, Director of Scarborough Jazz Festival.  'In December last year I booked a virtually unknown 26-piece orchestra that had never had a gig outside London and in March this year they received the All Party Parliamentary Jazz Award as 'Jazz Ensemble of the Year'.  And this only a year after the orchestra was formed!'

At the core of the Orchestra will be The Phil Meadows Group which will also be playing on the Friday afternoon at this year’s festival.

Phil will be joined in the front line by trumpeter Laura Jurd who was a hit at the festival in 2013 and received this year’s Parliamentary Award as ‘Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year’.  She’s certainly the talk of the town at the moment!
