Grand Opening of The OutReach Rooms at Stephen Joseph Theatre

SJT OutReach participants

A new £350,000 community facility in Scarborough will open its doors to the public in a grand opening and taster day on Sunday 17 May.

In its 60th anniversary year, the Stephen Joseph Theatre unveils The OutReach Rooms, a new dedicated learning space for its OutReach department which runs a varied programme of creative activities and works in, with and for the community.

Following the ribbon cutting by OutReach participants at 12noon, there will be free workshops taking place throughout the day until 4pm to showcase the range of activities on offer, including performances for toddlers, adult writing, stage combat, youth theatre, play reading, blood and guts stage make-up, circus skills, singing, storytelling and more.

Artistic Director Chris Monks said: “The OutReach Rooms will belong to everyone, making the Stephen Joseph Theatre even more accessible to the people of Scarborough and beyond. With the work nearing completion, we’re preparing to move into the new OutReach Rooms and the excitement is building steadily towards 17 May – the Grand Opening! Everyone at the SJT senses that these new spaces will invigorate our work and encourage more people to get creative. As the company prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary we can’t wait to embark on this new phase of our artistic journey.”

The development has been made possible through a £275,000 Arts Council Capital Grant via the National Lottery plus additional funds from donors, sponsors and raised through special events and public donations.

Major internal renovation work started at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in January to create a multi-purpose studio, reception area and entrance accessible from Northway. The Capital project also sees the creation of brand new prop and costume storage facilities which will now be based on site.

Since it was established six years ago, OutReach has grown and several classes have not been able to take place in the theatre due to lack of space, however the new facilities will allow the department to hold more activities in house, bringing the community closer to the theatre to engage with the arts.

In addition to the existing OutReach programme which includes creative sessions and courses for children and adults, youth theatre groups, family performances, dance and choirs, the department will be introducing new project work and supported learning for children, adults and the elderly.

Head of OutReach Denise Gilfoyle said:
"We're incredibly excited that we’ll be able to increase creative learning throughout the area. OutReach is all about giving people a chance to build skills and confidence in a friendly environment and showing the social and physical benefits of arts and theatre. There’s something for everybody in the open day celebrations; come and see your new community space, find out more about OutReach and give one of our free taster workshops a try."
Visitors can sign up to the free workshops on Sunday 17 May from 11am at the SJT Box Office.
