A critically-acclaimed new, bold and daring production of Romeo and Juliet is heading to the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough from 9 to 13 June.

It is the latest tour from Bristol-based company Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory, co-produced with Tobacco Factory Theatres, and will be the only chance to see the production performed in Yorkshire as part of a national and international tour. The company has previously toured to the SJT with As You Like It and Two Gentlemen of Verona.

This is a story of boy meets girl. But it is not a simple love story. These children’s lives are fuelled by mistakes, hatred, violence and exquisite pain. They are entangled in the infamous family feud without a hope of getting out alive. And yet…and yet…we cannot help but hope.

Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece proves that love is a force to be reckoned with. Romeo and Juliet will never grow old and neither will this story; this is a love story that was, is and will be again.

Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory welcomes the young Russian director Polina Kalinina as the company’s first guest director since Jonathan Miller directed Hamlet in 2008. The cast includes: Alan Coveney, Paul Currier, Paapa Essiedu, Craig Fuller, Chris Garner, Joey Hickman, Oliver Hoare, Timothy Knightley, Hannah Lee, Callum McIntyre, Sally Oliver, Fiona Sheehan, Daisy Whalley and Jack Wharrier.

"This much-told fable about the battle between youth and age is given a revamp that will make anyone over the age of 25 worry about being past it…Thrilling work." - The Guardian

"With its 'star is born' central turn and youthful vitality to burn this Romeo and Juliet is a bullseye for Shakespeare at the Tobacco Factory." - What’s On Stage

"It’s some of the best fight choreography out there." - What’s On Stage

“Sexy, swaggering, savage…This is a Romeo and Juliet filled not with sighings and swoonings but with grunts and roars: passionate, full of vivid emotion, shot through with the (blood)lust of youth.” - Bristol 24/7

"With strong acting, a cracking psychedelic-rock soundtrack and onstage bust-ups to keep you on edge for hours, this production is definitely one to pay a visit to." - Intermission magazine
