New The Wizard of Oz Themed Play Park to Open in Barrowcliff

Barrocliff Park Plans

Barrowcliff Big Local Partnership is pleased to announce the official opening of the brand new Barrowcliff Park in Scarborough on Saturday 23 May.

The park will be officially opened by local residents Ida Osborne, aged 91 years and her great granddaughter, 15 months old Millie Salt. They will cut the ribbon to the park with the assistance of the Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough at 10.00am.

The new The Wizard of Oz themed park is the flagship project for the partnership - a resident-led group responsible for overseeing the 10 year-long Big Local programme in Barrowcliff. It has a separate toddler park, older children's area, all-weather ball court, art sculptures designed by local children and picnic area.

Local residents have been the driving force behind the development of the park, which has been on the wish list of the community for many years, supported by various partners. It replaces the former play area on Briercliffe and Gildercliffe.

The park has been funded primarily by the programme's Big Lottery Fund, as well as generous contributions from Scarborough Borough Council, Yorkshire Coast Homes, Sanctuary Housing,

Barrowcliff Residents' Association and North Yorkshire Police and Crime Commissioner’s Community Fund.

Bill Chatt, Vice Chair of Barrowcliff Big Local Partnership said:
"I am very proud to say I have been part of this. It has been the largest investment in a single play park in the entire borough of Scarborough."
"Local residents have worked on the design of the play equipment and the public art with the support of the school council from Barrowcliff School."
"This has been a two year project and all the group and partners have had involvement and input. The journey has also been videoed by the Scarborough TV News website."
"Residents who have wanted to be involved have been able to have a voice and vote on some real spending in the Barrowcliff area. This is not Scarborough Borough Council money; it is ‘Big Local’ cash specifically for the Barrowcliff area."
"Big Local has supported the group during the whole process and with eight years to run and around £500,000 still to spend, we really hope we can continue to deliver big improvements for the whole Barrowcliff community."

Julia Mulligan, Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire added:
"This new park will be a great asset for the community providing a focal point for families and children. I have been really impressed with the local residents for their persistence in seeing this project through to the end."
"The keystone to safer communities is knowing your neighbours and getting involved with what's going on. This project has brought parents together and in the future will bring children closer together to strengthen the community further."
