The Russian State Ballet & Opera House Set to Return to Scarborough Spa

Puccini’s Madam Butterfly

After the successful performance of Rigoletto in the Grand Hall this February, The Russian State Ballet and Opera House are heading back to Scarborough Spa on Sunday 7th February 2016 with Puccini's Madam Butterfly.

This tale of the doomed love of an American naval lieutenant and his young Japanese bride inspired Puccini to write some of his most sublime and beautiful music.

Set in Japan at the turn of the century, Madame Butterfly is among the most colourful and exotic of all operas, and from its theme of noble self-sacrifice spring melodies that grips your heart.

The basis of the plot is actually a true story of a Japanese geisha girl who had a son by 'marriage' to an American naval officer who soon deserted her, leaving her heartbroken. This touching story of innocent love crushed amidst two utterly different cultures resonates as strongly as ever in today's world.

Madame Butterfly will be the third Opera at Scarborough Spa performed by The Russian State Ballet and Opera House. They will also be appearing on Tuesday 15th September 2015 with ‘La Traviata’. On both appearances this impressive cast will be joined with a large live orchestra featuring over 30 musicians.

Tickets for ‘Madame Butterly’ are now on sale, priced at £29.50 and £27.50 for concessions. Tickets are available from The Spa’s Box Office (01723) 821888 and via
