Flag Flying Ceremony To Honour Our Armed Forces

Armed Forces Day Flag

Residents in Scarborough borough are invited to show their respect for the UK Armed Forces by watching the special Armed Forces 'Show your Support' flag being raised during an annual ceremony in Scarborough next week.

The event, which will take place at 10.15am on Monday 22 June in the Town Hall gardens on St Nicholas Street, will mark the start of the week running up to Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June.

The flag will be raised during the ceremony at 10.30am, as it will be all over the country, in the presence of the Mayor and Mayoress of the Borough of Scarborough, Cllr Tom Fox and Mrs Ros Fox.

The Mayor will lead the proceedings with representation from the Royal British Legion and local veterans and cadets. Children from Barrowcliff and Friarage schools will also attend the ceremony and afterwards will have the chance to talk to some of the veterans.

This year, the ceremony will benefit from a military musical performance. The Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, Cllr Tom Fox, explained:
"We are privileged to have a performance from the Corps of Drums of the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment. We are very excited to welcome them to the borough to mark the start of our Armed Forces week celebrations."
The 12 drummers will then go on a mini tour of the borough in the afternoon, performing at flag flying ceremonies at Dock End in Whitby at 1pm and Memorial Gardens on Murray Street in Filey at 3.30pm. The Mayor will accompany them throughout the afternoon.

Former Army Captain, Tony Viney, who has arranged the visit said:
"I am delighted that the Corps of Drums has found time in its busy schedule to visit the three main towns in our area. The drummers will act as a focal point for those looking to pay tribute to the dedication and hard work of our Armed Forces and the sacrifices they make. We encourage anyone who is able to come along to one of the special celebrations to do so."
Armed Forces Day in Scarborough runs from 12.00pm until 5pm on Saturday 27 June starting with a performance from the Yorkshire Volunteers Band and an official welcome from the Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, Cllr Tom Fox.

At 3.30pm, the Breitling Wingwalkers, the world’s only aerobatic formation wingwalking team, will take to the skies above Scarborough strapped to the top wings of 1940s Boeing Stearman biplanes for a daring display with full commentary.

Other highlights include: RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfire Display, Search and rescue helicopter demonstration, featuring the new Sikorsky helicopter, in partnership with
