Asteroid Day

More well known for their fossil hunting trips, rock-pooling sessions and dinosaur footprint walks, geology and natural history experts Hidden Horizons are hosting a special lecture on asteroid impacts on 30 June.

The lecture, which takes place at Woodend, is in association with Asteroid Day on Tuesday 30th June, the anniversary of the largest asteroid impact on Earth in recent history - the 1908 Siberian Tunguska Asteroid Impact.

Asteroid Day is the first International day of its kind providing increased education and awareness about asteroids and providing vital information of what we can do to protect our planet, families, communities and future generations from dangerous impacts.

The lecture is one of only five official Asteroid Day events in the UK and will discuss the 1908 Siberian Tunguska Asteroid Impact and the 2013 Chelyabinsk events. It will also include a look at the evidence of cratering on Earth, the numbers of threatening bodies and the mitigation methods that can be used to avoid an impending collision. The session will also allow attendees the chance to look up close at a number of meteorites.

Tickets for the event are £5 each and available to purchase in advance via

A full listing of Asteroid Day events can be found on the website, including activities for the two premiere events in London and San Francisco.
