'Northern Gothic' Announced as Next Exhibition at Woodend Gallery

Northern Gothic

'Northern Gothic' has been announced as the next exhibition set for the Woodend Gallery featuring the work of Scarborough-born photographer Sharon Harvey.

Sharon was born in Scarborough in 1970 and graduated from London's Central College of Art & Design in 1997. Now based in Otley, her film and photography work is based on the forests and coasts of Yorkshire. She uses processes inspired by Victorian techniques to capture a timeless, almost otherworldly quality in her work.

Referring to the exhibition Director Andrew Clay said:
"I'm hugely impressed by Sharon's work. She's exhibited throughout the UK and internationally, so it's a real coup for Woodend to have one of her exhibitions. We are also delighted that Sharon has received support from the Arts Council of England for this body of work."
As the title of the exhibition suggests there is a dark, supernatural element to some of Sharon's work - quite appropriate for a venue that dates back to 1835 and, as Andrew admits, supposedly has a ghostly presence.
"One or two tenants have reported some strange noises when they've been working in the evening," he laughed. "I think the atmosphere and mood created by the Gallery at Woodend will be absolutely ideal for Sharon's work."
As always admission to the exhibition - which runs from 20th June to 18th July - will be free.

Woodend is situated in The Crescent, Scarborough and is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and from 10am to 4pm Saturday when there is an exhibition on.
