Large Quantity Of Alcohol Confiscated As Part Campaign Targeting Under-Age Drinking & Anti-Social Behaviour

Some of the alcohol seized during the Community Impact Team’s ‘sweep’ of Scarborough.

Scarborough's Community Impact Team has confiscated a large quantity of alcohol and spoken to more than 70 youngsters as part of an ongoing campaign targeting under-age street drinking and anti-social behaviour.

The team of police officers, PCSOs, special constables, Scarborough Borough Council officers and staff from Foundation Housing and the Cambridge Centre tackled youngsters congregating at a number of known trouble-spots during a Friday evening 'sweep' of the town.

Police seized 120 separate alcoholic beverages, including wine and schnapps, tobacco and drugs paraphernalia. Two young people were also arrested, one for being drunk and disorderly and another for a suspected drugs offence, with another child taken home.

The Community Impact Team says more parents should expect to get a knock at the door in the coming weeks, as part of the summer-long crackdown, codenamed Operation Ambience.

Sgt Chris Smalley, North Yorkshire Police said:
"We've had a number of reports from the community about anti-social behaviour, under-
age drinking and possible drug taking."
"It is behaviour we will not tolerate. Not only is it detrimental to the quality of life for the vast majority of people who are good, honest, law-abiding citizens, but young people are putting themselves in potentially dangerous situations, which is particularly worrying."
Scarborough Borough Council Community Safety and Safeguarding Manager, Sandra Rees, added:
"This type of multi-agency approach allows us to collect good intelligence and follow-up any concerns we have about particular individuals and refer on, where appropriate, to other support services."
"The Community Impact Team will continue to work with schools as well as parents; our priority has to be about educating children so they stay safe and don’t put themselves in harm's way."
"We are also asking parents to take some responsibility. If your child is going out, ask them where they are going, what they are doing and who they are with."
