Leigh Franks joins Scarborough Athletic from Harrogate Town

Leigh Franks

Scarborough Athletic announced the signing of defender Leigh Franks last week from Harrogate Town.

Franks, who lives in Hunmanby and started his football career at the Scarborough FC Centre of Excellence, has also been appointed as new Club Captain for the season ahead by joint managers Bryan Hughes and Paul Foot.

The 24-year-old made 21 appearances in total for Conference North side Harrogate Town last season, as well as a short loan spell at Buxton towards the end of 2014 alongside Boro striker Tom Corner. But Franks is eager to move on and get started for his local club to make sure he is ready for the new season.

Speaking of the move Franks said:
"It’s great to join Scarborough Athletic and get to play for my home town team. I want to help the club get to a higher level and that’s what we’ll all be working towards in pre-season and in the games ahead."
"I supported Scarborough FC when they were in the Conference and used to play for the Centre of Excellence when I was a teenager, so I know the recent history of the club and some of the fans from the old club who still support Scarborough Athletic."
The centre-back was also honoured to be given the captain's armband at Boro saying:
"It's fantastic to be given the captaincy by Bryan and Paul for next season; they have shown their faith in me and I will be aiming to set an example and lead from the front."
"When I sat down with them it was evident that Bryan and Paul are striving for success at the club, they are both clear about their vision for Scarborough Athletic going forward and I can't wait for it all to begin."
Joint boss Paul Foot expressed his delight at securing Franks saying:
"Leigh is a massive signing for us; he is a strong, physical defender with a big fighting spirit who will give everything for the club. It's great that he has decided to come and be a part of what Bryan and I are trying to achieve at Scarborough Athletic, to help us improve on last season and move the club forward."
Bryan Hughes, also pleased to land another target with higher level experience added:
"Leigh ticks all the boxes for us. He has an affinity to Scarborough but he has also played higher up the pyramid. He is a commanding centre-back who reads the game well and is strong in the tackle. Leigh is a leader on and off the pitch which is why we have appointed him captain for the forthcoming season."
After a spell as a junior at the Scarborough FC Centre of Excellence, Leigh moved along the coast to play for Bridlington Town. In 2007, at just 16 years old, Leigh caught the eye of Huddersfield Town, signing for the club’s Academy then going on to spend two years with the Terriers as a professional.

During his time at Huddersfield, Leigh had two loan spells, one at Fleetwood Town during the 2009-2010 season and the other at Oxford United in 2010/11, where he made 5 appearances for the League Two side.

After his release at the end of the 2010/11 season from Huddersfield, Leigh joined Alfreton Town in the Conference North. Over the course of the next two seasons, he went on to appear 60 times for the Reds, including 34 appearances during 2012/13 along with two goals.

In summer 2013 Franks decided to move to Harrogate Town despite a new contract offer from Alfreton, joining the Conference North side on a two-year contract for an undisclosed fee under the Bosman ruling.

After just 15 league starts this season at the CNG stadium, Franks was released earlier this month to enable him to join Boro for 2015/16.
