Crime Prevention Advice Following Spate of Shed Burglaries

Scarborough's Community Impact Team is reminding residents to keep outbuildings secure following a number of shed burglaries in Eastfield.

Statistically, thieves are more likely to target sheds, outbuildings and garages than homes and with bicycles, garden equipment and furniture often stored inside, a break-in can prove costly.

Free UV pens, which residents can use to mark more expensive property with their house number and postcode, are now available from Scarborough Borough Council's Customer First centre on St Nicholas Street, though supplies are limited.

The multi-agency Community Impact Team, part of the borough's Safer Communities Partnership, also wants residents to take other precautions, including:
  • Putting away any equipment that could be used to help a criminal break in, such as a spade or trowel
  • Installing outside lighting, even battery powered lights or solar lights
  • Fitting a mortise lock or padlock to sheds and outbuildings that are not secure
Sgt Chris Gosling from North Yorkshire Police said:
"Making life more difficult for the criminal, to keep them out of your home or outbuildings, really needn't be as difficult or costly as you might think."

"If you need crime prevention advice or have other questions, our local police community support officers would be more than happy to come out and speak to you."
