Popular Pierrots: Collections Close-up at Scarborough Art Gallery

Scarborough Pierrots

The 'popular pierrots', who entertained summertime visitors to Scarborough in the late 1800s and early 1900s, are the focus of the next Collections Close-up at Scarborough Art Gallery on Tuesday 4 August.

Scarborough Museums Trust Communities Curator Rachael Drew will take a look at vintage photographs of the pierrot troupes on the town’s beach, and other ephemera.

Rachael says:
"The pierrots were a hugely popular part of a trip to the seaside. The story of troupes such as Catlin's Favourite Pierrots and Carrick's Popular Pierrots is a fascinating part of the history of Scarborough."

The monthly Close-ups feature a themed selection of items from the Scarborough Collections, each one explained by a member of the Scarborough Museums Trust team.

Collections Close-ups take place on the first Tuesday of each month. Each takes around an hour, and participants are asked to meet at Scarborough Art Gallery at 2.30pm.

Places on the event are £2 each. Places are limited, so booking is recommended. To book, or for further information, please call the Art Gallery on 01723 374753.
