Search For a (19th Century) Star: Scarborough Theatre Company Seeks Actors For Next Production

A Scarborough theatre company is looking for actors for its next production, which will celebrate the life of 'the father of English geology', William Smith.

Beach Hut Theatre Company will present the multi-media 'rock opera', Rock, Rascals and Revolution! from the exterior balcony of the Rotunda Museum on the weekend of 26 and 27 September. The show, part of Scarborough Museums Trust's celebrations of the bi-centenary of the publication of Smith's groundbreaking geological map, will also feature projections on the building.

The company is holding open auditions for 12 actors at Scarborough Art Gallery from 7pm on Monday 20 July.

John Pattison, who is writing the show and co-directing it with Rachael Drew, says:

"This fun, family orientated musical production will feature a core cast of twelve actors supported by local schoolchildren, community actors and a full rock band. The 12 actors will play a variety of national and local historical characters. The most challenging role is probably that of William Smith himself – we need an actor who can sing, and also portray him at the ages of eight, 18 and 30! The show is full of catchy new musical numbers and I am really excited about getting rehearsals underway as soon as possible."

In 1815, William 'Strata' Smith (1769-1839) published his 'map that changed the world'. The techniques he developed whilst creating the map, which shows the geological strata of England and Wales, are still the basis for much geological research today. A copy of Smith's map is on display in the Rotunda Museum.

He lived in the Scarborough in his later years and was a member of Scarborough Philosophical Society, which opened the Rotunda, one of the world's first purpose-built museums, in 1829, and acted as clerk of works on the build.

Rock, Rascals and Revolution! is supported by Arts Council England, under the Grants for the Arts Fund.
