Sports & Leisure Management Appointed to Manage Town's Leisure Centres Including New Leisure Village

Everyone Active

Scarborough Borough Council has selected Sports and Leisure Management Ltd (SLM Ltd) to manage its leisure centres as well as Scarborough’s brand new Leisure Village, currently under construction.

SLM Ltd, which operates under the Everyone Active brand, has been selected under a 10 year contract that is due to start on completion of the new Leisure Village in 2017. However given that the development took a crucial step forward and received planning permission in July, the council and SLM Ltd are currently reviewing the potential for SLM Ltd to start managing current leisure facilities before 2017. These discussions are at a very early stage and council officers will report progress to councillors in September. Open communications with staff about the plans have already started.

The Leisure Village, which will be home to Scarborough Athletic Football Club, will include a wide range of state-of-the-art facilities. Those will include a brand new football ground, a 25 metre swimming pool and a learner pool, a four-court sports hall, squash courts, a 60-station fitness suite and an aerobics studio. The Leisure Village will replace Scarborough Sports Centre and Scarborough Indoor Pool.

Whitby Leisure Centre and Pindar Leisure Centre will receive investment for improvements. Whitby Leisure Centre comprises of two swimming pools, a fitness suite, sports hall, function room, an outdoor multi-use games area and an outdoor tennis court. Pindar Leisure Centre will also receive a new fitness suite to accompany the existing, six-court main hall and astro turf for outdoor activities.

SLM is the UK's longest established leisure contractor, with more than 27 years’ experience of managing local authority leisure contracts. The award-winning operator currently manages more than 100 facilities across the country, including leisure centres in nearby Ryedale and Redcar and Cleveland, in partnership with more than 37 local authorities.

David Bibby, SLM Ltd’s Managing Director, said:

"We are delighted to have been chosen to manage the centres by Scarborough Borough Council. This is a very exciting time for the town, with such fantastic and brand new leisure facilities in the pipeline."

"We pride ourselves on being a community-focussed company, with a mission to encourage more people to do at least 30 minutes of exercise, five times a week. The new Leisure Village will undoubtedly play a huge part in improving the health and wellbeing of people in Scarborough and our focus is now on ensuring that we achieve our mission and that each of the centres is managed to the highest standard when we begin operating them."

Cllr Andrew Backhouse, Scarborough Borough Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Culture, Scarborough Borough Council said:

"After a thorough and transparent procurement process, we are delighted to select SLM Ltd as the company to operate new and improved facilities at our leisure centres. SLM’s proven expertise in the leisure services industry, combined with greatly improved facilities, will be a winning combination aimed at getting everyone active and living healthier."
