Free Children's Stagecraft Workshops With SJT OutReach

SJT OutReach - stage fighting workshop

The Stephen Joseph Theatre's OutReach department has received the backing of Julia Mulligan, the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, to deliver a super series of free workshops for young people across the borough.

Stagecraft takes place in Scarborough and Whitby and is an exciting project open to 7 to 16 year olds who can develop new skills, build confidence and raise their self-esteem through a range of performance arts activities.

The project is led by theatre professionals from SJT OutReach and is generously supported by the Police and Crime Commissioner North Yorkshire Community Fund.

Children and teenagers are invited to take part in everything from samba drumming and stage fighting to circus skills, music and movement, shadow work and costume making on the theme of heroes and villains. They will also be tasked with producing a documentary film of the entire process.

A series of Stagecraft workshops will be held in the wards of Barrowcliff, Castle Ward, Eastfield, Edgehill and Whitby between August and November and will take place either over the course of one week or on a weekly basis depending on location.

Participants will be able to show off their newfound skills in a public performance for friends and family at the end of the project and there is also the chance to gain an Arts Council England accredited Arts Award too.

The sessions will be recorded by a professional videographer for a special film screening later in the year to which all participants will be invited.

Stagecraft is also supported in partnership with the Street Angels, Youth Prevention Services, North Yorkshire Youth, ei Media, Proudfoots and Sainsbury’s.

Julia Mulligan, Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire, said:

"I am very pleased to see the Community Fund doing what it was set up to do; helping local people improve community safety. Engaging with young people living on the east coast is vitally important, and so I look forward to seeing what this project can achieve."

Garry Leck, SJT OutReach Project Coordinator, said:

"Stagecraft is a great opportunity for young people to get involved and to learn new skills in a fun, friendly community project. Through the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Yorkshire and local partnership organisations, we’re delighted to be able to take our work even further into the community."
