Happy 70th Birthday To Scarborough's Harbour Bar

Harbour Bar

This month marks the 70th anniversary of Scarborough's Harbour Bar.

The Harbour Bar has been a Scarborough institution for 70 years and is as popular today as it was when it opened it's doors on Saturday 25th August 1945

To this day, the 1950s style milk bar retains all its original charm including the famous yellow and white interior, hand painted signs and pyramids of preserved fruit in jars - a tribute to earlier years where fresh fruit was hard to come by and had to be bottled by hand.

Owner Giulian Alonzi's, grandfather emigrated to the town from Monte Cassino in Southern Italy, and opened a small bar on Eastborough as well operating a small fleet of ice cream barrows along South Bay.

In 1945 Giulian's parents, Tony and Annie, continued the family business, opening 'The Harbour Bar' on August Bank Holiday Saturday,  then selling just ice cream and coffee.

The opening day was a huge success with the new business selling out in just two hours and making the grand profit of £48 (around £1,500 in today's money).

Giulian was born and raised in the flat above the Harbour Bar and started working there in his early teens along with his two sisters, Ann and Susanne. After training to be an accountant, he returned to the family business in the early 70s, and in the early 80s, with his parents almost retired, he and his wife Theresa took over.

The couple continue to expand and improve the Harbour Bar and, despite the air of nostalgia, Giulian and Theresa are continually experimenting with flavours and encouraging their staff to come up with new ideas.

The Harbour Bar is a member of the Ice Cream Alliance and has won many awards, including the Silver Challenge Cup for the best ice cream in the UK and the Gold Award for 50 years of membership.

Giulian doesn't advertise much. His dad always said:
"The only thing that sells ice cream is good ice cream."
