Preview of Scarborough’s New £2m Lifeboat

Anyone who would like to see what Scarborough’s new lifeboat will look like should head down to the harbour between Saturday 15 and Monday 17 August.

A Shannon all-weather lifeboat, en route from RNLI HQ in Poole to Montrose in Scotland, will pay a short visit from Saturday afternoon until Monday afternoon.

Officials hope to berth it near the current lifeboats, so it will be viewable from Vincent pier.
Scarborough RNLI will acquire a Shannon, the newest member of the RNLI fleet, next year.

The £2m lifeboat has been funded by donations from the FW Plaxton Charitable Trust.

The trust was set up following the death of Frederic ‘Eric’ Plaxton to ensure that the proceeds of his estate are applied to charitable purposes for the benefit of the inhabitants of Scarborough in memory of his father.

Frederick William Plaxton was the founder of Scarborough-based coach building firm Plaxton Ltd, and the new lifeboat will be named in his memory.

Shannon Class Lifeboat

  • First modern RNLI all-weather lifeboat to be powered by water jets and not propellers making it the most agile and manoeuvrable in the fleet.
  • Capable of 25 knots - 50% faster than the lifeboats it replaces
  • Smallest and lightest of all RLNI 25-knot lifeboats
  • Requires a bespoke Supacat launch-and-recovery vehicle to launch from the beach
  • Supacat launch-and-recovery vehicle costs £1.5m

Scarborough's current all-weather lifeboat, the Mersey-class Fanny Victoria Wilkinson and Frank Stubbs, is nearing the end of its operational life.

A new lifeboat-house is being built to accommodate the larger new lifeboat. In the meantime, the town’s two lifeboats are berthed in the harbour.
