Volunteers Wanted For Community Beach Clean

Bottle on Beach

World Animal Protection is teaming up with local partners including Scarborough Sea Life Centre, the RSPCA to undertake a clean-up of Scarborough's Jackson Bay.

Local marine loving volunteers are also been sought to help clean up the beach, which is located in Burniston, in the hope that it will raise awareness of the impact lost fishing gear, otherwise known as ghost gear, has on marine animals.

A spokesperson for the World Animal Protection said:

"Ghost gear has serious consequences for marine animals through entanglement and ingestion as well as impacting on public enjoyment and the safety of beaches"

"The clean-up team wants to highlight the great work happening within the community not only through the groups who organise beach cleans, but by the local partners rescuing and rehabilitating marine animals, local surf businesses promotion the marine environment and members of the fishing community who are involved in tackling the issue"

The clean-up is targeting Jacksons Bay as it is a more difficult beach to access and not usually the focus of public beach cleans. As a result this beach can pose a risk to local marine creatures due to the litter accumulated there.

The route will be heading to Burniston beach following Cleveland Way, looping back to the Sea Life centre. Approximate duration is 3 hours. Due to the geography of the beaches the clean-up is only appropriate for those able to undertake difficult walking and scrambling.

Members of the public are invited to join in the clean-up on Wednesday 19th August at 9.00am by meeting at the Sea Life Centre. All volunteers will be allowed free access to the centre following the clean-up. To sign up please get in contact with Todd German on 01723 373414 ext. 8.
