Frank Henry Mason Exhibition at Scarborough Art Gallery

The vivid and evocative works of renowned marine painter, print maker, illustrator and poster designer Frank Henry Mason are celebrated in the next exhibition at Scarborough Art Gallery.

Frank Henry Mason – the Man and his Methods can be seen at the gallery from Saturday 26 September 2015 to Sunday 3 January 2016.

Mason (1875-1965) was born in Seaton Carew, but had a strong connection with Scarborough, living in the town with his family from around 1890. The self-taught artist, a founder member of the Staithes Art Group, is famous for his gorgeously-coloured marine paintings, and distinctive Art Deco travel and railway posters.

The exhibition will feature many rarely seen works by Mason chosen with the help of the leading authority on his work, Edward Yardley, and never exhibited in Scarborough before. Works will come from the Scarborough Collections, and from other private collections.

There is also the late addition of a ‘carriage print’ – a decorative piece from the interior of an early 20th century railway carriage – which was recently donated to the Gallery.

Collections Assistant Julie Baxter, who has curated the exhibition, explains:

"It was purely coincidental – a lady turned up at the gallery just a couple of weeks ago with the coloured etching, which she had found amongst her late father’s effects. It’s a fantastic carriage print entitled Bruges via Harwich, 1936, a fantastic addition to the Collections."

"Mason was a naturally talented artist who took his inspiration from so many different sources; his work was very varied and eclectic as a result. Visitors will see examples of the many different strands of his work, including a beautiful piece of original artwork for one of his hugely popular railway posters."

The exhibition will also include objects featuring artwork designed by Mason, including a clock, playing cards and menus.

Edward Yardley is the author of a new book, Frank Henry Mason: Marine Painter and Poster Artist (Colley Books Ltd), which will be on sale in the gallery’s shop.

The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturdays from 10am to 5pm, plus Bank Holidays.
