Search Underway for Scarborough’s New Town Crier

Honorary Freeman of the Borough, Alan Booth MBE

Oyez! Oyez! Oyez! Hear ye this news! The search is underway for a new town crier in Scarborough.

Following the retirement of Honorary Freeman of the Borough, Alan Booth MBE, after 31 years of dedicated service, Scarborough Borough Council is calling on anyone interested in taking up the honorary position to apply and take part in an outdoor public audition in front of a judging panel on Friday 9 October.

When asked about what qualities are most needed to make a good town crier, Alan Booth MBE, who will be on the judging panel, said:

"Ultimately, we'll be looking for someone that wants to do the job for the love of the town and the borough. They should always have the best interests of the area at heart."

"As well as the obvious skill of loud hailing, a town crier has to demonstrate exemplary behaviour at all times and be smart in appearance. They must like meeting people, engaging in conversation with young and old and listening to others. A good knowledge of the area's history, culture and attractions would be a distinct advantage although they should also be willing to learn on the job.”

At the audition, each candidate will have to hail two announcements, one written by the judging panel, which will be provided to candidates in advance and one that the candidate has personally written for the occasion.

The winning candidate will be provided with a new town crier uniform, which will be designed and made by creative art students at Yorkshire Coast College. The fabric for the uniform is being provided and sponsored by Boyes Stores.

Andrew Boyes, W Boyes & Co Ltd said:

"Alan has been a tremendous ambassador for Scarborough so I wish the council well in its quest to find a replacement. We are happy to offer our support by providing the materials for the new town crier’s uniform and look forward to seeing what magic the Yorkshire Coast College students can work on our fabric and trimmings."

Sian Harrison, Yorkshire Coast College added:

"We’re delighted to have been asked to get involved in this project. By using modern creative techniques with a design that will respect the important historic nature of the role, our students will aim to bring together the very best of the past and present in a uniform fitting for Scarborough’s new town crier."

Further details about how to apply for the role can be obtained from the council's Civic Officer, Irene Webster, by calling 01723 232323 or emailing irene.webster@scarborough.gov.uk

The council must receive applications, including submission of each candidate’s personal announcement, no later than 30 September.
