Another Three Original New Plays From Springboard

Springboard Scriptwriters’ next event of three new short plays by emerging Scarborough writers can be seen at Woodend Gallery.

Following on from the success of the first evening in their Autumn Season, the three ‘script-in-hand’ rehearsed readings include work by three writers featuring themes of human nature, commercialism and family loss.

This second event of the Autumn Season is on Friday 23rd October at Woodend on The Crescent in Scarborough at 6.30pm. Entrance costs £3 and soft drinks are available to purchase, or you can bring your own bottle.

Springboard Scriptwriters are organising the event. Through short feedback sheets the audience can identify strengths and areas for development for each script performed, thereby becoming an active part of the performance event and helping to improve the quality of writing.

All of the plays have been workshopped through the scriptwriting course of the Outreach Department of Stephen Joseph Theatre under the tutorship of Alison Watt.

The three plays on 23rd October are by William Duffield, John Cooper and Colin Scales.

‘Dream Lover’ by William Duffield

Will has done stand-up comedy for about 20 years, writing quite a lot of his own material. In 2004 he won a writing competition and had his play performed by professional actors in the Forum in Barrow-in-Furness. Will joined the Write Stuff course at the Stephen Joseph Theatre after moving to Scarborough in 2012.

Will says:

"My involvement with Springboard allows me to experiment with story content as well as play a part in the production and enactment of the piece. 'Dream Lover' is an entertaining visit to a bygone musical age but also an illustration of how human nature hasn't changed...well, not much anyhow!"

‘Tools of Management’ by John Cooper

John Cooper, best known locally as a poet, is a former newspaper drama critic and was involved in am-dram in the West Riding for many years. He has scripted numerous documentary films, written sketches for revues and recently completed a collection of short stories. John has a BA (Hons) in Creative Writing from the University of Hull. This is his fifth play.

John says:

"Tools of Management’ is a contemporary drama and finds the raw edges of emotions in a manufacturing business when commercial viability is in conflict with deeply held ideologies of pacifism."

`Didn`t Think To Mention` by Colin Scales

Colin has been writing for about four years and after self-publishing two novels on Amazon Kindle under his pen-name Ray J. Cowling, ventured into play writing. `Didn`t Think To Mention` was inspired by a television documentary and is based on a true story.

Colin says:

"I have always loved the writing process, but seeing and hearing the words on the page  `come alive,` and hearing the audience reaction, make  all the many hours of writing, re-writing and rehearsing even more worthwhile."

The remaining events in the Springboard season are:

  • 23rd October – Plays by William Duffield, John Cooper and Colin Scales.
  • 27th November – Plays by Stuart Larner, Paul Spencer and Michelle Watts.

Bookings can be made by ringing Woodend on 01723 384500. Further information is available at:
