Chris Thorpe’s Fringe First Winning Show on Tour to the Stephen Joseph Theatre

Confirmation is an electrifying and challenging one-man show that asks the question, can we really see the world through someone else's eyes?

Following its critically acclaimed debut, the 2014 Fringe First-winning show, written and performed by Chris Thorpe and directed by Rachel Chavkin, is now on national tour and can be seen at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough on Thursday 5 November at 7.30pm.

Confirmation is a show about the gulfs we can’t talk across and about the way we choose to see only the evidence that proves we’re right. It examines the phenomenon of confirmation bias and attempts to have an honourable dialogue, real and imagined, with political extremism.

A multi-award-winning creative team explore the phenomenon of confirmation bias, examining and questioning the rise of extremist thinking within the UK’s political landscape and exploring the strength and grounding of people’s beliefs.

Originating from Chris Thorpe’s own frustration with the current level of political discourse in the UK, and his own ‘liberal’ bias, the work has been developed through academic research and through conversations with political extremism, in an attempt to open discussion on the subject in a more objective environment.

Chris Thorpe has been at the helm of some of the most critically acclaimed productions in recent years including What I heard About The World, the award-winning #TORYCORE and I Wish I Was Lonely.

Rachel Chavkin is Artistic Director of The TEAM, a New York City-based theatre company, four-time winners of the Scotsman Fringe First Award and winners of the 2011 Herald Angel and 2011 Edinburgh International Festival Fringe Prize.

On developing the show, writer and performer Chris Thorpe said:

"I've always been fascinated by conviction, because it seems mysterious to me. Not that I don't have deeply-held beliefs – I do – but because those beliefs weren't necessarily specific, burning certainties. So I decided to investigate how the processes that allow us to form a worldview are thought to work. And these processes are double edged – the information gathering and filtering that makes daily life possible, applied on a larger scale, contain this huge potential for destruction. I decided to talk to someone of conviction. To see if it was possible to have a conscious conversation about those unconscious processes. A respectful conversation. To listen to those voices, and my voice, to see if we could get beyond the conviction. Maybe make my own liberalism less lazy. To see what that might do to me."

Confirmation has been praised by critics following its debut at last year’s Edinburgh Festival, receiving four star reviews from the Guardian, Times, Time Out, Independent and The Scotsman.

“An absolutely compelling performance from a man who is fast becoming one of the most powerful performers in the UK” - The Scotsman

“Makes the brain both hurt and buzz… Confirmation is a show that lets nobody off the hook: not us, and definitely not Thorpe.” – The Guardian

“Thorpe and director Rachel Chavkin energetically take a liberal Fringe audience to the edge of the abyss of belief and hang them over the side in a conversation for our times.” – The Independent

Tickets for Confirmation, priced from £10 to £15 or £6 for under 30s, are available online at and from the SJT box office on 01723 370541. Suitable for ages 14+.
