The life and works of Albert Strange: Collections Close-up at Scarborough Art Gallery

Albert Strange

The work of maritime artist Albert Strange is the focus of the next Collections Close-up at Scarborough Art Gallery on Wednesday 4 November.

Albert Strange (1855-1917) was a talented artist, writer, adventurer, sailor and yacht designer whose craft are still much sought after, and whose intelligent writings are seen as a significant contribution to the development of the seaworthy cruising yacht.

He was appointed as headmaster of Scarborough’s new Government School of Art in 1882, a position he held until his death. Within just a few years he had established the school as one of the leading art schools in the country, with a roll call of pupils that included many well-known names, some of whose work can be seen in Scarborough Art Gallery, including Richard Clarke, and brothers Ernest and Frank Dade and Charles and Harry Wanless.

The Collections Close-up will be led by Collections Assistant Julie Baxter, who says:
“I’ll be looking at the unframed works we have in store by Albert Strange. We have about 70 sketches in pencil and watercolour, some of them in a sketchbook. I'll be talking a little about his art and early life before he came to Scarborough and his time at Scarborough School of Art.”

The monthly Close-ups feature a themed selection of items from the Scarborough Collections, each one explained by a member of the Scarborough Museums Trust team.

Collections Close-ups take place on the first Wednesday of each month (please note new day – these events were previously held on Tuesdays). Each takes around an hour, and participants are asked to meet at Scarborough Art Gallery at 2.30pm.

Places on the event are free, but are limited, so booking is recommended. To book, or for further information, please call the Art Gallery on 01723 374753.
