Scarborough Borough Residents to Benefit From New Lifestyle Improvement Service
A new lifestyle service which gives residents the chance to lose weight and improve their health and wellbeing is now available across Filey, Scarborough, Whitby and the surrounding areas.
The new service is managed by Everyone Active, in partnership with North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC) and NHS Hambleton, Richmondshire and Whitby CCG (HRW CCG), and has been funded through a Public Health Grant and Better Care Funding as part of joint CCG and NYCC collaboration. It is available for adults who are overweight, obese or at high risk of obesity who have been referred by their GP. The programme is part of wider work to improve the health and wellbeing of local communities.
The service consists of a 12-week support programme, aimed to help people make informed decisions regarding their weight and live a healthier lifestyle. It includes 90-minute weekly sessions, made up of both physical activity and nutritional advice and information.
County Councillor David Chance, executive member with portfolio lead for public health said:
"North Yorkshire County Council is investing £700,000 over two years through our public health grant to fund programmes across the county that encourage people to review their lifestyles and discover what they can do to improve their health and overall enjoyment of life"
"The success stories we've been told about show that this is an excellent use of money, and better levels of fitness now can also help prevent many health problems in later life. The new programme is completely free for participants and I am confident that it will continue to be popular and successful across the borough."
Everyone Active is a specialist sports and leisure operator and recently took over the management of Whitby Leisure Centre, Scarborough Indoor Pool, Scarborough Sports Centre and Pindar Leisure Centre, in partnership with Scarborough Borough Council. The company has over 27 years’ experience in delivering high quality community health and wellbeing services across the UK.
HRW CCG used Better Care Funding to fund the service. Dr George Campbell, Whitby GP and member of the HRW CCG Governing Body said:
"This service shows a real commitment to joint working in our area, with the patient as the focus."
"As a CCG, we were keen to ensure our patients in the more remote areas had access to this fantastic and life-changing opportunity. It is a very welcome service for our area and we are keen to hear feedback from users."
Martin Miles, Everyone Active’s contract manager, said:
"We’re delighted to be launching this valuable and important service for local communities in the Borough of Scarborough."
"Our aim is to provide more people with the devoted and on-going support and education they need, to help them make better choices and maintain a healthier lifestyle."
