Scarborough Open Air Theatre enters new partnership with UK event promoter Cuffe and Taylor
Scarborough Borough Council has signed a five year deal with award winning and nationally renowned event promoter Cuffe and Taylor to stage acts at Scarborough Open Air Theatre in North Yorkshire.
The partnership will see Cuffe and Taylor have exclusivity at Europe’s largest open air theatre to put on 12 shows per year, starting from 2016, including the already announced Simply Red concert on 10 August. The North-West based company will handle the production of each event, manage all marketing and Box Office requirements, look to bring in touring shows and take all financial risk on each event.
Having brought Sir Tom Jones to the venue this year and being impressed with the council’s management and operation of the theatre, Cuffe and Taylor approached the council with a proposal to promote the venue exclusively from 2016 to 2020. After a thorough assessment of the proposal by the theatre’s management team and the council’s legal and financial officers in conjunction with the Leader of the Council, the deal was agreed by way of a Leader Decision on 28 October. Importantly, the partnership will allow the council to retain ownership and management of the theatre.
Cuffe and Taylor is one of the UK’s largest independent music promoters and a member of the Concert Promoters Association.
Over the last five years the company has grown significantly. The hugely successful Lytham Festival, Betley Concerts and Greenwich Music Time are among the company’s festivals and events, which have seen them work with artists including Tom Jones, Neil Diamond, Billy Ocean, McBusted, Faithless, Collabro and Katherine Jenkins.
They have also worked extensively with Rod Stewart and are presenting his eight-date outdoor stadium UK Hits Tour in 2016.
Cllr Derek Bastiman, Leader of Scarborough Borough Council said:
"We’re delighted to have Cuffe and Taylor on board to help us deliver an exciting new chapter for Scarborough Open Air Theatre. Our own management team has delivered some really successful events in the last few years and at the same time has been looking for ways in which it can make the theatre’s season bigger and better. It was the strong relationship the team formed with Cuffe and Taylor earlier this year that led to thisopportunity to work with them exclusively for the next five years. We’re looking forward to seeing how their experience and flair can help us build on the theatre’s growing reputation in the music industry and its popularity with concert goers."
Cllr Andrew Backhouse, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Tourism and Culture added:
"Cuffe and Taylor’s success, in what is a relatively short period of time, speaks for itself and we have very high hopes for what can be achieved through the new partnership. We know how important the success of the Open Air Theatre is to local businesses and the borough’s economy as a whole. We’re therefore confident that we have the right partner to help us increase ticket sales, attract a greater variety of acts and promote the venue to an even bigger audience than ever before."
Cuffe and Taylor Director Peter Taylor said:
"We are thrilled we’ve been able to sign this deal with Scarborough Borough Council as we see this as a very exciting partnership."
"We work with some of the biggest names in music and plan to bring internationally renowned stars to the Open Air Theatre over the coming years, which we see as not just great for Scarborough but the whole of the Yorkshire Coast and beyond."
"Cuffe and Taylor presents live music events across the UK and we have been looking to secure a base to promote further events in Yorkshire. Scarborough is providing us with a great opportunity to do that and, as with our other events, we hope to see not just the town benefit but the whole area as people come from far and wide when they visit the venue."
In 2015 more than 150,000 people were entertained at Cuffe and Taylor events across the UK. With the announcement of the Scarborough Open Air Theatre deal, Rod Stewart’s UK Hits Tour and the myriad of other events Cuffe and Taylor will be presenting, it is anticipated that this figure will be in excess of 500,000 in 2016.
