Springboard Scriptwriters’ Season Finale

Springboard Scriptwriters

The final evening in the Springboard Scriptwriters’ Autumn Season of new short plays by emerging Scarborough writers, can be seen at Woodend Gallery, Scarborough on Friday 27th November.

The three ‘script-in-hand’ rehearsed readings of short plays by three writers have a general fantastical, mythological theme. The event starts at 6.30pm, entrance costs £3 and soft drinks are available to purchase, or you can bring your own bottle.

Unlike standard rehearsed script readings, the audience members are offered the opportunity (if they wish) to give direct, anonymous feedback on the plays they have watched. This provides interactive fun for the audience, and helps to improve the quality of writing.

All of the plays have been workshopped through the scriptwriting course of the Outreach Department of Stephen Joseph Theatre under the tutorship of Alison Watt.

The three plays on 27th November are by Stuart Larner, Paul Spencer and Michelle Watts.

‘Odds and Gods’ by Stuart Larner

Stuart has had various plays performed by Beach Hut Theatre, Springboard Scriptwriters and for the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s ‘Plays and Pinot’. His latest book is the cricket novel “Guile and Spin”.

‘Odds and Gods’ is a modernised re-telling of the Greek Myth about Jason, the Argonauts, the Golden Fleece, and Medea.

Stuart says:

"In ‘Odds and Gods’, Jason and Medea must face all the ancient monsters, each of which has a modern equivalent in today’s Scarborough. King Phineas is menaced by seagulls, the red-eyed Talos monster of the roadworks in Valley Road and the cul-de-sac by the Spa traps cars like the Sirens."

‘The Astral Queen’ Paul Spencer

‘The Astral Queen’ is the name of a holiday cruise liner - in space! Its Captain, a glorified caretaker, finds herself way out of her depth in the face of outraged guests and leaky engines. Can she keep

Paul says:

"After spending most of my life scribbling prose, I joined a local drama group and became interested in writing stage plays. I find the workshop approach of the SJT's Write Stuff programme invaluable, and Springboard Scriptwriters an exciting outlet for scripts developed by that process."

‘Mr Moat’ by Michelle Watts

Michelle started writing two years ago when she joined the Write Stuff course at the Stephen Joseph Theatre. She has had plays performed for ‘Plays and Pinot’ at the Stephen Joseph, and for Springboard. She was also one of three writers on the Scarborough Museums Trust and SJT Outreach project Real Lives Retold about the Scarborough Bombardment in 1914.

Michelle says:

"This play is set in the Gallery at Woodend where the play readings are actually taking place. Woodend is undergoing major renovation and the security guards are starting their nightshift - expect the unexpected!"

Bookings can be made by ringing Woodend on 01723 384500. Further information is available at
