Boxing Day 2015 - Scarborough's Favourite Day of the Year
Traditionally Christmas Day is the favourite day of the year in the UK, but to many Scarborians it's just Boxing Day's Eve.Eagerly anticipated, often months in advance, it's Boxing Day that's actually the main event of the festive season for many in Scarborough. It's a day when the whole town goes out to catch up with old friends, enjoy a drink together and prolong the festivities for as long as possible.

These days it's a day for everyone. Pubs open early and are packed with revellers throughout the entire day. Many folk head down to the seafront pubs to start their Boxing Day binge, where there are also several unique events held each year to keep the crowds entertained.
The Fishermen versus Firemen Boxing day football match kicks off at 10:30am on Scarborough's South Bay beach - Firemen being the stokers from the old steam trawlers. The match is Scarborough's oldest surviving custom, having first being first played on Christmas Day in 1893, and is held to raise money for local people in need.
The two teams will be serenaded by the Comic Band as they parade down Newborough before the match and will be collection for the Fishermen and Firemen Charity Fund along the way.
Following the football the ever-popular Boxing Day Raft Race takes place at the harbour. Organised by the Sub Aqua Club, the annual fancy-dress raft race starts at approximately 12:30pm. If you want to watch, get their early as crowds flock to the harbourside to watch the teams battle to win the race on their home-made rafts - often pelting their competitors with eggs & flour along the way.
