Across The Dales & Coastal Trails: New Exhibition at Scarborough Art Gallery

Fred by Roy Buckley, Scarborough Art Society

A new major exhibition at Scarborough Art Gallery, Across the Dales and Coastal Trails, is an open exhibition featuring the work of local artists from Scarborough Art Society, Cayton Art Club and Yorkshire Coast College.

The theme of the exhibition is people or places around the Borough of Scarborough, which covers the coastline from Whitby in the north to Filey in the south and inland to the North Yorkshire Moors National Park. Works have been submitted by members of Scarborough Art Society and Cayton Art Club, together with pieces from Yorkshire Coast College students as part of their BTEC Foundation Diploma Art and Design and Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art. All the work on show will be for sale.

Scarborough Museums Trust Collections Assistant Julie Baxter says:

“Scarborough is and has been many things to many people. Each group of artists has created artworks in response to scenes of local people, landscapes, buildings around the Borough, tourism, the beach, popular attractions and whatever they love about the Borough of Scarborough.”

Andy Black, Lecturer in Fine Art and Art History at Yorkshire Coast College, said:

"This is a great opportunity for the public to see some of the fantastic work on which our students have produced. For our students the exploration of their location has allowed them to not only to respond to landscape but also to investigate the history, politics, memory, people, objects and narratives of place."

Joy Green, secretary of Scarborough Art Society, said:

“I’m in a unique position of being both a recent Fine Art graduate of the College and the Secretary of the Scarborough Art Society. Both institutions have the desire ‘to foster the study and practice of art’ and both have a desire for excellence. It’s a pleasure to see the historical links between the College and the Art Society continue today and a delight to have the opportunity to work together in this exhibition.”

Barrie Petterson, of Cayton Art Club, said:

“We are excited about sharing exhibition space with Scarborough Art Society and Yorkshire Coast College students. Hanging work alongside others invites comparison of both subject and technique. Other artists can share a breadth of ideas and inspiration and the atmosphere is always one of mutual encouragement. This year’s topic will inspire all our members to endeavour to capture the diverse and wide range of material within our environment.”

The new exhibition runs until 13 March 2016. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturdays from 10am to 5pm, plus Bank Holidays.
