Eastfield House Helps Tackle Loneliness

A Scarborough day care centre is doing its bit to tackle loneliness amongst older and vulnerable adults during the long, dark winter months.

Eastfield House is throwing open its doors for a week for anyone to call in for a chat, a cup of tea and a chance to see the activities and facilities they have there.

Head of Care Melanie Padgham said:

“January and February can be the most difficult months. The days are long, cold and dark and they can make older and vulnerable people feel lonelier than at any other time in the year.

“That is why we thought it was a perfect time to have something of an open house where anyone can call in for a chat and a cup of tea or coffee and some company.”

The open house at the day care centre for older people will run from 25th to 29th January. People are welcome just to drop in to the centre on Eastway, Eastfield or call 01723 502410 to book a visit.

Eastfield House supports the charity The Silver Line, which provides help for older people, particularly those suffering loneliness. Its support includes a free telephone helpline, The Silver Line Helpline 0800 4 70 80 90.

As part of its open house week, Eastfield House will make a donation to The Silver Line.
In a study published recently, one in 10 older people describe themselves as being lonely often or all of the time. The Health Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, has warned that the UK has an “epidemic of loneliness.”

More than half of all over 75 year olds in the UK live alone.

Mrs Padgham added:

“I think we all need to do more to help people who are lonely. This is our modest contribution to help some local people who might be going through loneliness right now.”

Eastfield House provides day care visitors with an opportunity to meet friends, try out therapeutic activities, enjoy home-cooked, nutritious food and refreshments and all the comforts of home. Visitors can relax and watch TV or a film, play a game, join in organised activities or enjoy hobbies and crafts.
