Melvyn Bragg Headlines Books By The Beach Festival
Books By The Beach co-directors, Heather French and Peter Guttridge, have announced that Baron Melvyn Bragg, veteran TV and radio broadcaster and novelist, will be appearing at the Spa as a headline guest at this year’s Scarborough book festival on Friday 15 April.
Heather French said:
"I’m thrilled that Melvyn Bragg is heading across the “border” from Cumbria to Yorkshire for this event! He is one of the authors I have wanted at the festival since we launched it."
"Last summer, after I saw the BBC documentary, Wigton to Westminster, I was determined to get him for Scarborough. And he said ‘Yes’!"
Peter Guttridge, as chairperson at other book festivals has shared the stage with Baron Bragg and says:
"This event will be about Melvyn Bragg the author. He has done such an extraordinary job championing culture over the years - particularly on television’s The South Bank Show and BBC Radio’s In Our Time, but also in the House of Lords since his ennoblement in 1998 – that his novel writing has often been overlooked.
"Much of his fiction has been autobiographical,’ Guttridge comments, ‘and often it has been the more powerful for that. The Soldier’s Return Quartet about his own parents and his childhood is a good example. But whenever he turns to history he is brilliant at evoking the period without getting in the way of the story."
The full festival programme will be announced at the end of this month.
Heather French said:
"To say we’re excited about it would be an understatement. Ordinarily I would say Melvyn Bragg would be the icing on our cake – but this year we have a big cake and a lot of icing! Come along and enjoy a taste of it!"
Tickets for Melvyn Bragg are now on sale priced at £10. Tickets are available from The Spa’s Box Office 01723 821888 and via www.scarboroughspa.co.uk
Tickets for all other festival events will be on sale early February at the Stephen Joseph Theatre.
