Be a Part of Scarborough’s New Market

Scarborough Market Hall

Do you want to be a part of Scarborough’s new redeveloped market? Then the partners behind the transformation want to hear from you.

Scarborough Market is about to undergo a £2.7m facelift which will create exciting new opportunities.

Now the partners in the project – Scarborough Borough Council and the University of Hull – want “expressions of interest” from anyone who might like to apply for a unit.

They want to hear from anyone with exciting and innovative ideas who is interested in either taking a permanent unit or one of the temporary stalls that will be created.

Councillor Bill Chatt, Scarborough Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for Public Health and Housing, said:
“The redevelopment of the market is a very exciting opportunity for Scarborough and we are looking for people who want to be in at the start of a wonderful future for the building.

“At this stage we are seeking expressions of interest from anyone who has the germ of an idea for something new and innovative that they can add to our market of the future.”

The council is also working with existing stallholders and using a specialist company to find the right mix of stalls for the market.

Anyone interested in applying should contact Nick Taylor, Scarborough Borough Council’s Investment Manager, on 01723 232440 or via Nick.Taylor@scarborough.gov.uk

The revamp was made possible thanks to a £2.7m grant from the Coastal Communities Fund, administered by the Big Lottery Fund.

The historic market building is to get a complete makeover, during which a new mezzanine floor will be added, to create space for new shops, offices and a café.

The physical alterations will be joined by two exciting online projects.

The University of Hull is creating an online market, a virtual Scarborough market on a single website, with lots of different traders, but one pay point.

It is also creating an online market intelligence system. This will be an invaluable source of data and analysis of key trends and influences on the local business environment.

It will help those running businesses or considering setting up a business in and around Scarborough. For example, it will enable a greater understanding of how changes in the local market and wider business environment (political, economic, social and technological) might impact upon their costs and revenues and thus upon their business performance.
