Music For All Tastes at Coastival 2016

Coastival 2016

Fans of all different types of music – from rock and folk to choral and classical - will be well served during Coastival in Scarborough.

A wide ranging programme of music will grace Coastival when it runs from 12th to 14th February.

Choirs at Coastival will see a selection of local choirs perform from 12noon to 4pm on Saturday 13th February at the Art Gallery.

These will include the Coastival Choir, which has been rehearsing since October for its performance. Others will include SJT Global Voices, Hands and Voices, SJT Youth Choir and SJT Funky Choir.

Performances are free.

Coastival Classics – A Day at the Seaside - will see performances from different “characters” throughout Saturday 13th at the Art Gallery, Rotunda and the beach, between 11am and 4pm. Artists will bring to life characters from Seaside Songbook, a new choral work by Jonathan Brigg and James Cave.

Following on at the Rotunda, from 4.30pm to 5pm on the Saturday, Vox will perform.

Then on Sunday, 14th February, Bedlam, a contemporary brass quintet formed at the University of York, will perform at the Rotunda from 11 to 11.45am.

Later, singer-songwriter Rose Ford will entertain at the Art Gallery, from 2 to 2.45pm.

Coastival Classics will burst back into life at the Rotunda from 3.30 to 4.30pm when X24, alumni of the University of York’s ‘The 24’ sing traditional sea songs, river songs and, with a nod to the 400th anniversary of the writer’s death, settings of some of William

Shakespeare’s most famous words, including Full Fathom Five from The Tempest.

Other music during Coastival will include Cast, Asian Dub Foundation and Snake Davis, as well as other sessions featuring local bands, DJs and VJs.

Director Wendy Holroyd said:

“We’re proud of our musical mix this year and think we’ve got an excellent spread of different sounds and styles. A look through the programme and we’re sure everyone will find something to enjoy during the weekend!”

Copies of the Coastival 2016 programme are now available from Woodend, Scarborough Spa, The Stephen Joseph Theatre, Mojo’s, the YMCA, The Street, the Rotunda, Scarborough Library, the Art Gallery and a host of other cafes, shops and galleries.
