Weekend of Free Activities For Kids at The Rotunda Museum to Celebrate British Science Week
A weekend of exciting activities at Scarborough’s Rotunda Museum covering space, windpower, geology and engineering, will celebrate British Science Week.An annual event organised by the British Science Association, British Science Week, which this year takes place from 11 to 20 March, is a ten-day celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths featuring fascinating, entertaining and engaging events and activities across the UK for people of all ages.
British Science Week 2015 saw over 5,000 events engage more than 1.6 million participants, with activities taking place across the UK.
Scarborough Museums Trust is organising a weekend of free activities at the circular Rotunda Museum, overlooking Scarborough’s seafront, on 19 and 20 March.
SMT’s Education Officer Rosie Goodwin says:
“British Science Week is the UK’s largest grassroots celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths.
“This year the theme is all about the different spaces where science can be found and done. With activities throughout the Rotunda Museum, we’ll be exploring spaces above, below and all around us.”
The programme for both days is identical. All the activities are drop-in sessions, so no booking is required.
10am to 5pm – Could you survive as an astronaut?
Come along and try our test – suitable for all ages
10.15am to noon – Wind Power
A fun craft activity to get you thinking about how scientists harness this resource – perfect for ages three to seven.
From 11am and 2pm (each session lasts 20 minutes) – Dinosaur Stomp
Storytelling sessions with a dinosaur theme for under-7s in the Rotunda’s chldren’s area.
Noon to 2pm – Fabulous Fossils
Come and learn about fossils from SMT’s collection, or bring your own for our geologists to identify – for ages four and upwards.
From 1pm, 1.40pm, 2.30pm, 3pm, 3.40pm (each session lasts 20 minutes) – Sound Science
Exploring acoustics in the Rotunda’s gallery through singing sessions – suitable for all the family
2pm to 4.30pm – Construction Extravaganza
Have you ever wondered how bridges stay up? Find out in our construction challenge – suitable for ages seven and upwards.

The Rotunda Museum is open from 10am to 5pm, Tuesdays to Sundays, plus Bank Holidays.
