Experience Italian Art at Stephen Joseph Theatre This Summer

Italian Art at Stephen Joseph Theatre

Art and culture lovers can travel the length and breadth of Italy at the Stephen Joseph Theatre’s cinema this summer.

The SJT is presenting three major cinema events from Discover Arts looking at three major Italian cultural icons: Milan’s Teatro Alla Scala (Friday 27 May at 7.45pm), the work of Leonardo da Vinci in Milan (Saturday 18 June at 5pm), and St Peter’s And The Papal Basilicas Of Rome (Saturday 16 July at 5pm). They follow the successful screening of Discover Arts’ Florence and the Uffizi Gallery last Christmas.

Teatro Alla Scala: The Temple of Wonders is the story of one of the world’s most exclusive music and performing arts venues. Thanks to historical music and theatre greats such as Giuseppe Verdi and Arturo Toscanini, and contemporary arts directors including Franco Zeffirelli and Patrice Chéreau, Teatro Alla Scala has upheld its position as a world-class theatre throughout the years.

The film leads us through the main historical, musical, social and political events in La Scala’s 238-year history. The story is beautifully brought to life on the big screen through statements and commentary from musicians, experts and aficionados, and features photographs, musical scores, paintings and videos from centuries of archive material.

In spring 2015 Milan paid tribute to Leonardo Da Vinci by holding an extraordinary exhibition event at the Palazzo Reale. Leonardo Da Vinci: The Genius in Milan explores his work as never seen before, telling the story of the artist’s world and the treasures he left us.

The curator of the 2015 exhibition Pietro Marania and some of the world’s leading experts on Da Vinci tell a story that could open new perspectives and reveal extraordinary things about the painter, sculptor, scientist, anatomist, botanist and architect.

St Peter’s and the Papal Basilicas of Rome brings completely new footage of St Peter’s, St John Lateran, St Mary Major, St Paul Outside The Walls and the works of art enshrined within them to the big screen.

Director of the Vatican Museums Antonio Paolucci, internationally renowned architect Paolo Portoghesi, celebrated art historian Claudio Strinati and director of the Vatican Museums’ Collection Of Contemporary Art Micol Forti guide us through the story of the basilicas, their evolution over the centuries and their most famous works of art.
