Orchestra Discover Hidden Musical Gems At Scarborough Spa
Hidden in the cellars and the attics of Scarborough Spa is a vast library of music belonging to the legendary Scarborough Spa Orchestra. There are over 6000 pieces, some of which go way back to the time when the Orchestra was founded in 1912. In those days, complete symphonies and concertos were played even in the light-hearted morning concerts. Nowadays, with the Orchestra much reduced in size, its widespread fame is built on a reputation for playing the very best in popular light music, with some well-known classics thrown in for balance and good measure.
Recently, Musical Director Paul Laidlaw, Music Librarian Stephen Walker and Orchestra Member Graham Quilter have been combing through the music archive to see if there were any hidden treasures. And indeed there were! Paul at the piano and Graham on his clarinet have played through piles of neglected pieces and have discovered no end of musical gems.
All these will make an appearance in the Spa Orchestra’s concerts throughout the summer season. Most of the pieces will be new to the audience, and some, which might be familiar, have inexplicably fallen out of the regular repertoire. Without exception, they will bring welcome new tunes into the concert programmes.
New music can also be introduced into concerts when members of the audience generously make donations for the purchase of orchestral scores. These gestures are always greatly appreciated and enable the Orchestra sometimes to hire music from the excellent library of the Light Music Society for specific performances, or to buy outright sets of music for the Orchestra’s permanent use.
In addition, Paul Laidlaw is writing his own arrangements for the Spa Orchestra. The library already contains well over fifty of Paul’s arrangements, and for 2016 he promises selections from modern stage musicals and some exciting film themes.
Though the Spa Orchestra is an old Scarborough tradition, it has never rested on its laurels and has never been afraid to move forwards, whilst at the same time remaining true to its roots as the UK’s only remaining professional seaside orchestra playing timeless tunes which visitors travel from far and wide to hear and enjoy.
The Orchestra’s 2016 summer season will open with a morning concert on Monday 6 June 2016 and finish with a spectacular Grand Finale concert on Thursday 8 September. Tickets are now on sale and are available from The Spa Box Office (01723) 821888 or via www.scarboroughspa.co.uk
