Borough of Scarborough Welcomes New Mayor and Deputy Mayor

Mayor and Mayoress of Scarborough

Cllr Simon Green was today formally elected as Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough for the 2016 to 2017 mayoral year at the annual Full Council meeting of Scarborough Borough Council.

Cllr Green took over from Cllr Tom Fox who has been the Mayor for the last twelve months.

The new Mayor was born in Scarborough and has been a farmer in the village of Cayton all his working life. Cllr Green is married to Val, who will be his Mayoress during the mayoral year. They have two daughters, Karen and Rebecca, son James and they enjoy spending time with their seven grandchildren.

Cllr Green was first elected to Scarborough Borough Council for the 1999 to 2003 term.

His latest term of office on the council began in 2011. He is also a councillor on Cayton Parish Council and Chairman of the local flood prevention group. He has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Scarborough since 1997 and was its President from 2009 to 2010. He is a governor of St Peter’s RC Primary School and Cayton Community Primary School.

The Mayor has helped wife Val to establish the Stained Glass Centre at Killerby. They have also embraced farm diversification by offering bed and breakfast at Killerby Cottage Farm and welcoming guests from all over the world to the area. The Mayoress is the fourth generation of the Lazenby family to work with stained glass and she has produced stained glass windows throughout the country. Val is President of the Inner Wheel Club of Scarborough.

The Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, Cllr Simon Green said:
“It is a very special honour for Val and me to have the Mayoral office bestowed upon us. We will do our best to serve the borough as Mayor and Mayoress and we look forward to making new friendships and supporting many fantastic causes during the next twelve months.”

The Mayor and Mayoress will be promoting the idea that everyone is ‘Better Together’ as their mayoral theme for the year. The Mayor explained:
“If communities living in our borough work together, we are stronger than if we work individually. We are keen to focus attention on our area’s young people and our older residents who face problems with transport, finance and social contact. We feel that if we can bring these groups together, they will benefit hugely from sharing their knowledge, experiences and time.”

At the same meeting, Cllr Martin Smith was elected Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough. Cllr Smith, who has lived in the borough for 30 years, is married to Cherry who will be his Deputy Mayoress for the year. The couple has a daughter and a son.

Cllr Smith was born into a farming family in Ryedale but spent most of his working life in sales and marketing. Together with Cherry, he ran a hotel in Scarborough North Bay for 12 years, during which time he was President of Scarborough Hospitality Association for four years and was a Yorkshire representative on the English Tourist Board.

Cllr Smith was a founder member of Scarborough in Bloom and has been a regional judge for Yorkshire in Bloom. He is a past member of the Board of the Citizens Advice Bureau and Stephen Joseph Theatre. He has also served as a governor of Scalby School.

He served on North Yorkshire County Council for four years and is currently on his third term with Scarborough Borough Council. For a number of years he was a Special Constable with North Yorkshire Police and now attends many community and police meetings in his role as councillor. He is currently the Vice Chairman of Wheelhouse Square Trust, which provides sheltered accommodation for Scarborough residents in their later years.

The Deputy Mayor of the Borough of Scarborough, Cllr Martin Smith said:
"Cherry and I are very much looking forward to supporting the Mayor and Mayoress and their chosen theme during the next 12 months. We will take great pride in assisting them with their engagements and helping to promote all that is great about the borough in which we live and work.”
